Our History

NorthBay Healthcare has a long tradition of service to the Solano County region, continually improving and expanding services to meet the growing community’s needs. The origins of NorthBay Healthcare date back to 1956.

1956

Community leaders from Fairfield and Vacaville initiated a fund drive to build a hospital that would serve families throughout upper Solano County.

1959

The 32-bed, nonprofit Intercommunity Hospital opened its doors.

1977

Community growth sparked the construction of a new health care facility, Intercommunity Hospital.

1979

Intercommunity Hospital expanded to 108 beds.

1983

The need for a hospital in Vacaville became apparent and a ital campaign began.

1985

Intercommunity Hospital added a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

1986

A corporate reorganization changed the organization's name to NorthBay Healthcare. Intercommunity Hospital became NorthBay Medical Center.

1987

NorthBay Healthcare opened the 50-bed NorthBay VacaValley Hospital following a $1.2 million community fund-raising project.

1992

An addition to NorthBay Medical Center included a larger maternity department featuring labor/delivery/recovery rooms (LDRs), a larger Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a larger ER and a state-of-the-art critical care unit, bringing the hospital to 132-bed capacity.

2002

New NorthBay Medical Center Emergency Department opens.

The NorthBay Center for Primary Care opens its first medical office in Vacaville.

2007

New NorthBay VacaValley Hospital Emergency Department expansion opened.

2008

NorthBay Healthcare administration building opens in Green Valley.

2009

The NorthBay Heart & Vascular Center brings advanced cardiac treatment to Solano County.

2010

NorthBay Center for Women’s Health, an integrated program tailored exclusively for women, opens on the NorthBay Medical Center campus.

Robots link NorthBay hospitals to Dignity Health’s Neurological Institute stroke network.

2011

NorthBay Medical Center becomes the first Level III Trauma Center in Solano County.

NorthBay Medical Center becomes a STEMI Receiving Center.

2012

NorthBay Cancer Center celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

NorthBay Medical Center becomes an accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI.

2013

NorthBay Center for Neuroscience is established at NorthBay Medical Center.

2014

NorthBay Medical Center designated as a Baby-Friendly facility.

NorthBay Medical Center earns verification as a Level II Trauma Center.

2015

NorthBay Medical Center and NorthBay VacaValley Hospital earns the coveted "Magnet" designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

NICU celebrates 30th Anniversary.

2016

NorthBay Healthcare joins the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

NorthBay Healthcare opens its medical fitness center, HealthSpring Fitness.

The NorthBay Cancer Center moves from Fairfield to Vacaville and anchors the newly opened VacaValley Wellness Center.

A spacious new Welcome Pavilion opens at NorthBay Medical Center.

2017

A three-phase Emergency Department expansion begins at NorthBay Medical Center.

Longtime NorthBay President and CEO Gary Passama retires after 35 years; B. Konard Jones step into the role.

2018

NorthBay Healthcare opens its first NorthBay Urgent Care Clinic at the Nut Tree Plaza in Vacaville.

NorthBay Center for Orthopedics, Rehabilitation and X-ray opens under one roof on the Hilborn campus in Fairfield.

NorthBay Healthcare partners with OLE Health, opening a federally qualified medical clinic in NorthBay Health Plaza in Fairfield.

2019

A new, state-of-the-art North Wing opens at NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield. The three-story addition features eight surgical suites, 22 new patient rooms, an expanded Central Sterile department, the Shaw Family Kitchen and top-level diagnostic equipment. Patient beds now number 154.

NorthBay again is certified as a Baby-Friendly Hospital.

NorthBay begins its robotic surgery program.

2020

NorthBay Medical Center works with Travis Air Force Base, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local public health departments to care for any medical needs of evacuees from China, and later evacuees from a cruise ship afflicted with COVID-19.

NorthBay VacaValley Hospital treats the first patient in the country who acquired COVID-19 through community spread.

NorthBay Urgent Care opens a second location, this one in Fairfield, a block from NorthBay Medical Center. The two Urgent Care facilities play a key role in conducting COVID-19 testing.

2021

NorthBay Healthcare continues to treat COVID-19 patients through the year, at the same time rallying with vaccinations for staff, patients and the community, hosting clinics throughout the county and participating in a countywide mass vaccination clinic at the Solano County Fairgrounds.

NorthBay Medical Center is ranked one of the 50 best hospitals in the state by the U.S. News & World Reports. Urology, and treatment of diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, pneumonia and stroke procedures/conditions also earned “high performing” rankings.

NorthBay Medical Group earns the 2021 Excellence in Healthcare Award from the Integrated Healthcare Association for top performance on clinical quality, patient experience and cost measures.

NorthBay Trauma earns a three-year recertification from the American College of Surgeons.

NorthBay Medical Group partners with Hill Physicians Medical Group, making it the state’s largest independent physician association and also the largest in Solano County.

NorthBay Healthcare breaks ground in American Canyon for a new Center for Urgent Care, in collaboration with Carbon Health.
