Long-time Guild Scholarship Supporter Dies at 101

NorthBay Guild supporter David Balmer, 101, passed away on Jan. 5, 2018. Mr. Balmer had served as Solano County Administrator from 1954 to 1982 and was very involved with the Solano County Library Foundation. His wife, Betty, was very active in the NorthBay Guild, having served as president in 1963, back when the Guild was in its early building years.

When Betty passed away in 1993, Mr. Balmer established the Elizabeth B. Balmer Scholarship fund for teen volunteers, according to Jane Hilliard, director of Volunteer Services. It was the very first endowment established for NorthBay Healthcare Foundation, added Brett Johnson, president, NorthBay Healthcare Foundation.

The scholarships are awarded to Vacaville or Fairfield high school seniors who have volunteered a minimum of 100 hours in the NorthBay hospitals and are pursuing a career in healthcare, she explained.

“Despite his advancing age, David was sure to be present for nearly every scholarship award ceremony held in the years since,” Hilliard said, “and since the scholarship funds come from an endowment, the Balmers’ dedication to young volunteers will continue on in the years to come.”
