Suisun Elementary being awarded with certificate from NorthBay

Growing Good Nutritional Habits

Students at Suisun Valley Elementary School have a new outdoor kitchen and new irrigation for their school garden program, thanks to NorthBay Healthcare and its partners in a special project completed in 2017.

NorthBay Vice President of Public Affairs Steve Huddleston was presented a certificate of appreciation during the ceremony, which was followed by a tour of the garden and outdoor kitchen.

“This is another way we create a healthy community going beyond the walls of our hospitals and our medical offices,” he explained. “Healthy eating keeps the doctor away, they say. So that is what the garden program does.”

Mayor Harry Price welcomed the crowd of parents, business and civic leaders who attended an August ribbon-cutting event and praised the school, parents and volunteers.

Principal Jas Wright thanked NorthBay for its support of the outdoor kitchen, where students will be able to clean and eat the fruits — and vegetables — of their labor in the adjacent garden. In addition to the science and practical farming elements students learn through working in the garden, the kitchen provides more opportunities to teach about nutrition and preparing food.
